The Second Phase of Covid-19 in Sierra Leone

The phase two or the second phase of Covid-19 can be pictured as a situation that allowed history to repeat itself. Simply put, the virus {corona}, like in any other country, has not only killed our beloved relatives but has almost stopped our usual meetings at places where we go to commune with God for some days if not weeks. The ugly increase in Covid afflicted cases has forced many nations to live unusual life. A complete repeat of the above is what I refer to as ‘the second phase of Covid-19'. The steep rise is caused by the following...

To start with, the consistent reluctance of ourselves as citizens to abide by rules has landed us at the very place where we have no other alternative other than to face a replay of the stringent restrictions. Many Sierra Leoneans have a different thought and ideology very different from what is actually required. The persistent reluctance of the people on obeying preventive measures is no hype but a very major cause of the second phase of Covid-19. Had people adhered to the advice given by experienced and selfless health workers, we would not have placed ourselves in a situation that has claimed so many lives.

Another factor giving rise to the second phase of this Covid-19 scourge is the misinformation related to political beliefs and tradition. That is to say, a lot of my fellow countrymen and women underrated the precautions due to the negative fact that the party in governance was not from their base. The vaccines arranged by the health workers together with some stakeholders have completely and entirely been rejected by the country’s citizens simply because of the differences they have with the political party.

The third reason for the impossible phase 2 of the deadly Covid-19 is the inactive attitude of the security sector which was in charge of ensuring that the laws and recommendations were observed. That is to say... putting on face masks, avoiding crowded places, and observing curfew timings have been hugely compromised all this while. People in public spaces, marketplaces, and other religious and social gatherings have been on the rampage due to the inaction of the security in charge. It is my opinion and belief that if the lawbreakers were treated in accordance with what the law dictates, the first phase would have long gone... talk less of the second phase which is a repeated history of the inability of our security forces to enforce what has been prescribed by health workers.

The above causes are what has served to literally attract Covid-19 to Sierra Leone a second time. It would not have happened had people properly adhered to the recommended solutions which have been stated.

The stubborn people of the country can be handled by ensuring that there is added sensitization for all to understand the importance of complying with what both the health workers and the government suggested. It would have dispelled the ignorance of the citizens who are reluctant to adhere to measures when it came to fighting the second phase of Covid-19.

Another possible solution to handling these misguided people is by involving key opposition players consisting of rational, political-minded people accepting the fight against the deadly virus as an inclusive and general one. A child is safe when the father is around. Bringing onboard people from the other side of the political spectrum would have helped manage people kicking against the needed precautions due to political misguidance.

Finally, the act of the security sector compromising situations that had people disobeying preventive measures can be handled by ensuring there is proper sensitization on the need to maintain professionalism during both the service and also the existence of Covid-19.

The above documentation is a clear picture of what is faced by our very beloved nation and country. This is the second time the same virus got out of control leaving the innocent citizens along both sides to either survive or drive to an early grave. The ugly situation is keeping a stranglehold in the country. The complete cessation of all social and religious functions is still on and the fewer crowds almost everywhere are still the talk of the day making the second phase of Covid-19 the main topic of our TV stations and every major press.
